FIFA World Cup: Nice goalkeeper
Today I heard “Nice goalkeeper!” on Japanese TV. “Nice” is often misused by Japanese speakers of English. It’s fine when speaking Japanese, but in English we don’t say “The goalkeeper is very nice,” or “The team is nice.”
Instead, we say “The goalkeeper is good,” and “The team is great,” or a similar word showing skill.
We use nice like this: “That was a nice save (by the goalkeeper),” and “That was some nice play (by the player or team.”
Short examples would be “Nice shot!”, “Nice pass!” and “Nice tackle.”
