Halloween

Halloween was not traditionally celebrated in the UK, mostly because Christian families felt it to be unsuitable for their children to celebrate the image of evil spirits. Nowadays, families are more relaxed about it, as it is seen as nothing more than fun. ‘Trick or Treating’ is still not common in the UK, but Halloween parties have become more popular, as have decorated houses and shops.

ハロウインは、以前イギリスでは、一般的なお祭りではありませんでした。クリスチャンの家庭では、悪魔のイメージのお祝いは、子どもたちによくないと考えられていたようです。しかし現在では楽しいイベントとしてとらえる人が増えました。子どもたちが、トリック　オア　トリートと、家をまわるのはあまり見られませんが、家やお店のデコレーションや、パーティーが行われます。

British Halloween parties are not only for children – all ages have parties and always involve dressing up in scary and bloody costumes of ghosts, vampires, witches etc.

イギリスのハロウインパーティーは子どもたちのためだけではなく、大人もハロウインコスチュームを着て、大人だけのパーティーを行います。

This year Halloween marks the 75th anniversary of the famous radio broadcast in America in which actor Orson Welles made what appeared to be a fake report of an invasion from Mars. He was actually reading War Of The Worlds by British writer HG Wells. It was presented in the style of news bulletins breaking up music playing on the radio show. Many people thought it was real and panicked. Police went to the radio station and confiscated the drama script as evidence for arrest, but nothing came of it.

今年のハロウインは、アメリカの有名なラジオ番組から、75年目にあたります。その番組では、若き頃のオーソンウェルズ が、番組中の音楽を中断し、ニュースとして、火星からの侵略があると放送したのでした。彼は、HG Wells のWar Of The Worlds を読んでいたのですが、人々は信用し、パニックにおちいりました。警察が台本を証拠として押収し、逮捕するためにラジオ局へ行きましたが、罪に問うには至りませんでした。
