St. George’s Day

April 23rd is St. George’s Day, an English national day. There are often parades such as of the Boy Scout movement, and local events such as street decorations with morris dancing (an old traditional dance), and re-enactments of St. George’s fabled battle with a dragon – but not many people really know much about its origin. St. George was a Roman soldier who protested against the Roman torture of Christians, and has been adopted as the English ‘patron saint’. A patron saint is someone whom the church regards as being able to look over and protect. Though it is unlikely that he ever visited England, his emblem of a red cross on a white background became the English flag that we see now.

4月23日は　St. George’s Day です。各地で、デコレーションや伝統的なダンシング、ボーイスカウトのパレード、空想の物語、St George 対ドラゴンの戦いを真似たパフォーマンスなどが行われます。St. Georgeは、古代ローマの兵士でありながら、ローマ帝国のキリスト教徒迫害に対し、立ち上がりました。彼の死後、イングランドの教会では彼をイングランドの守護聖人とし、人々は彼に見守られ、助けられていると説いたのでした。現在のイングランド旗は、彼の紋章から作られていますが、彼がイングランドを訪れたことはありません。
