Brassed Off!
Brassed Off
This film is a ‘black comedy’ starring Ewan McGregor, set in the 1980s in Yorkshire, where coal mining had for many generations been the main employer for whole towns of people. During this time the British government was introducing nuclear power, and many coal mines were planned for closing. In this film we see the local community all worried about the impending closure and resulting unemployment, but the coal mine brass band plays on regardless. The title, Brassed Off, is a play with words – it means ‘angry’ but of course ‘brass’ also refers to the brass band. This film shows a strong image of the troubles facing Britain in the 1980s.
