Interesting Words – sunnies, Aussie abbreviations

Australia is famous for its abbreviated words used for informal communication, but a few of these words have actually become part of the British English daily vocabulary. Here are some examples:
uni (university)
selfie (photo of yourself)
barbie (barbecue)
prezzie (present [noun])
muso (musician)
sickie (a day off work due to sickness, both real or fake)

There are many more such abbreviated words in use in Australia that have not become standard use in English, such as ‘sarvo’ (this afternoon), ‘sunnies’ (sunglasses) and ‘preggo’ (pregnant).
