Breakfast in Manchester

Another photo from my student’s recent trip to the UK. This is an English fried breakfast (but English don’t eat this usually, honestly!) served in Manchester. In a ‘full English breakfast’ almost everything is fried (in English ‘fried’ usually means ‘shallow fried’ or ‘sautéed’, compared to ‘deep fried’) including English sausage, bacon, tomato (not fried in this picture), mushrooms and sometimes even fried bread, which I can’t eat as it contains too much oil. In this picture there are ‘baked beans’ (not fried) which are usually bought tinned, in a sauce. These are very popular in Britain, especially on toast as a lunch. English fried breakfasts often contain scrambled or fried egg and hashed potato.

前回クリームティーの写真を掲載したメンバーの方から、イングリッシュブレックファーストの写真をいただきました。イングリッシュブレックファーストは、fried （焼いたもの。揚げたものではありません）が多いです。ソーセージ、ベーコン、トマト(焼いて提供することろもあります)、マッシュルーム、食パンまでフライパンで油たっぷり焼くこともあり、ベイクドビーンズ（缶詰で売っています）、卵料理、ハッシュドポテトなど、ボリュームたっぷりです。

This pictured breakfast includes ‘Black Pudding‘, popular in the north of Britain, and not to everyone’s taste! I remember having it as a child, when I lived in Liverpool, but I haven’t eaten it since then. It is also known as ‘blood sausage’ because it contains blood of a pig or other animal. It can be found in many other countries also.

この朝食には、ブラックプディングも提供されています。これはイギリス北部で好まれていますが、一般的にポピュラーとは言えません。Blood sausage とも呼ばれ、材料に豚などの血が含まれています。

This word ‘pudding’ is an example of how Japanese-English words have one meaning whereas the English word often has several meanings – ‘pudding’ is not always a dessert, and in England ‘pudding’ can also mean all kinds of dessert. Confusing? The Japanese プリン is usually called ‘caramel custard’ or ‘Crème caramel’.

プディングという名前ですが、日本の‘プリン’とは異なります。また、イギリスで‘プディング’は、デザートという意味もあります。日本のようなプディングをご注文の際は、caramel custard’ または’Crème caramel’.です。
